Droughts and Our Forests across the North Country
Recent droughts in the North Country were a wake-up call for an improved understanding of the interplay between moisture extremes and forest health.
A Conversation with Climatologist Lesley-Ann L. Dupigny-Giroux
The historic North Country flash droughts of 2025 and the ecological droughts of 2012 and 2016 served as a wake-up call for an improved understanding of the interplay between moisture extremes and forest health across Vermont and New Hampshire.
Dr. Lesley-Ann L. Dupigny-Giroux is a professor of climatology in UVM's Department of Geography and Geosciences, the Vermont state climatologist since 1997, and the president of the American Association of State Climatologists from 2020-2022. An applied climatologist by training, Dr. Dupigny-Giroux's research interests intersect a number of interdisciplinary fields including hydroclimatic natural hazards and climate literacy, climate services, geospatial climate and land-surface processes, all within the context of our changing climate.
