Laura Gottlieb, MD, MPH, is Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she studies how healthcare systems can better identify and intervene on social adversity to improve health. She is the founding co-director of the Social Interventions Research and Evaluation Network (SIREN), a national research institute launched in 2016 to advance evidence-based strategies for social and medical care integration. Dr. Gottlieb’s research has explored the ethical challenges of integration, as well as its key building blocks, including the technology tools, workforce, policies, and funding mechanisms necessary to deliver social care in a wide range of healthcare settings. Her research has grounded multiple Medicare and Medicaid-centered programs aiming to address poverty as part of comprehensive strategies to improve health and health equity. From 2018 to 2019, she served on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Committee on Integrating Social Care into Healthcare Delivery to Improve the Nation's Health. In recognition for her foundational contributions to social care integration research, in 2019 she was elected to the National Academy of Medicine. 

Before moving into research, Gottlieb practiced as a family medicine physician with First Choice Community Health Centers in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She earned her B.A. from Harvard College, her M.D. from Harvard Medical School, and her M.P.H. from the University of Washington, where she also completed her family medicine residency and chief residency. She later completed fellowship training in social determinants of health with the the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Health and Society Scholars Program. From 2015-2023, Dr. Gottlieb served as an Associate Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Evidence for Action National Program Office at UCSF, which over her tenure distributed over $50 million in grants to organizations developing and testing interventions to improve health and racial equity.
