Biography

Rebecca Goldstein is an award-winning philosopher and novelist whose work combines science, understanding, self-understanding, and imaginative storytelling. She has authored several books, both non-fiction and fiction, including Incompleteness: The Proof and Paradox of Kurt Gödel, Betraying Spinoza: The Renegade Jew Gave Us Modernity, Plato in the Googleplex: Why Philosophy Won’t Go Away, Mind-Body Problem, The Dark sister, and Mazel. For her scholarship and fiction, Goldstein has received Guggenheim, Radcliffe, Whiting Foundation, and National Science Foundation fellowships and the MacArthur “Genius” Prize. Goldstein has also received Whiting Writer’s Awards, the National Jewish Book Award, the Edward Lewis Wallant Award, and a National Jewish Book Honor Award for her fiction. In 2015, Goldstein received the National Humanities Medal from President Barack Obama.

In addition to her writing, Goldstein is a committed teacher, serving as a professor at her alma mater Barnard College, as well as at Columbia University, Yale University, Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and New York University.

During her time at Dartmouth, Goldstein delivered a lecture titled, “Philosophy and Literature: The Ancient Quarrel.” She also visited a number of classes, attended social events with students and faculty, and participated in an interdisciplinary workshop with the departments of physics and philosophy.
