Biography
Robert Hollander (1933-2021) was Professor Emeritus in European Literature at Princeton University, receiving tenure in 1967 and retiring 36 years later in 2003. Best known for his work on Dante, Hollander wrote Allegory in Dante's Commedia, Boccaccio's Two Venuses, Studies in Dante, Dante's Epistle to Cangrande, and a volume of poetry, Walking on Dante. He was a prolific writer who wrote 15 monographs and translations, ten books, and hundreds of articles. Hollander directed the Dante Project at Princeton and Dartmouth.
Of the many awards that Hollander received, the Gold Medal of the city of Florence in 1988 and the International Nicola Zingareli Prize in 1999 stand out as honoring his work on Dante. Hollander taught students for more than 40 years in all, and his many contributions to Dante scholarship continue teaching students today.
